During World War II Ferdinando Innocenti ran a steel tubing factory in the Lambrate district of Milan in northern Italy, producing components for the Italian Air Force and construction. After the war Innocenti needed to find a new product in order for his business to survive. Inspired by the Cushman scooters that the US army imported into Italy Innocenti realised he could apply many of the parts that the factory was already producing to motor scooter production. Innocenti started production of Lambretta scooters in 1947, the year after Piaggio started production of its Vespa models.
The FD series was first introduced with a 125cc engine in December 1952 with wheels arranged in a tricycle style making it more stable than the previous FC. The front end was similar to the Model D but with stronger forks and heavier dampeners. The leg shields were sider than the scooter. The centrally positioned engine powered a prop shaft to drive the rear wheels. The whole machine was surprisingly agile and manoeuvrable with a turning circle of only 1.75 meters. In late 1956 the last series of the FD the Mk2 appeared with a larger 150cc engine. A new kick start design and increased strengthening including larger wheel nuts. The FD throughout its production life was offered with a choice of many back boxes, pick ups and a myriad of other commercial uses.
This Mk2 example is in a very nice restored condition. She was restored to a very high standard and housed in a collection Italy before being imported to the UK in 2019 where she has been kept in another private collection. This ‘Furgone’ is now UK registered and could be used immediately on the road. A very rare opportunity for any collector of Lambrettas or business looking for a unique delivery vehicle. Certainly something different.
