1950 Chrysler Windsor Drophead Coupe

Sold for £24,188

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: 112 YUJ
Chassis No: 67012421
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

Chrysler's Windsor range was produced in Michigan, USA from 1939 to 1961 and Ontario, Canada from 1961 to 1966. The successor to the Chrysler 300, it was offered in four-door Saloon, two-door Coupe and Drophead Coupe, not to mention Limousine guises. In 1950 specification the Drophead Coupe sported a 125.5 inch wheelbase and was powered by a 250ci (4.0-litre) flathead straight-six engine producing 116bhp at 3,600rpm and 208lbft of torque as low in the range as 1600rpm. The unit was mated to a four-speed 'Prestomatic' automatic gearbox. Suspension was independent by wishbones and coil springs at the front and by live axle and semi-elliptic leaves at the rear. Braking was by 12-inch drums all round and steering by worm and roller. Factory fitted options included power windows, air conditioning, and a valve radio.

'112 YUJ' is a left-hand drive, American-built Drophead Coupe from 1950 that reportedly remained in the care of its previous keeper for in excess of twenty years. More intriguingly, the vendor informs us that earlier in its life it was reputedly the property of MGM Studios, who are understood to have employed it in numerous films. During this time it is believed but not warranted to have been driven by such international stars as Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe.

In apparently very good overall condition, this delightful 'Hollywood film star' is finished in Powder Blue and trimmed in Blue leather/cloth. The copious level of trademark brightwork appears to be in good order and the Chrysler's extensive specification includes a power-operated hood, period radio and pillar-mounted spot light. The car is thought (but not warranted) to have covered around 81,000 miles from new. Taxed and MOT'd, this delightful Drophead Coupe is now ready to begin a new stage in what appears to have been an already interesting life - if only cars could talk!
