The Suzuki Motor Co. was established in 1909 by Michio Suzuki to produce machinery for the cotton industry. An initial diversification into 4 wheeled transport was curtailed by WW2 but after the war Japan had a need for cheap reliable transport so Suzuki, like a lot of others around the world, began to produce clip-on engines for pushbikes. These proved to be an immediate success and soon they were making full motorcycles and by the early 60s were second only to Honda in numbers of two-wheelers manufactured. On its launch in 1978 the X7 was promoted as the 'Ton up 250' with its claimed 100mph top speed and actually led to the introduction of new licensing laws restricting learners to 125cc bikes a couple of years later.
This 1981 X-7 has undergone a nice authentic restoration keeping most of its original features including the rare Suzuki silencers. Stored in a heated garage as part of a private collection of 70s/80s classics it has not been run for a number of years so will need some recommissioning before use. The engine turns over on the kickstarter and compression feels good, lights work once connected to a battery pack. A fast appreciating classic that's still useable in modern day traffic.
