1967 MG B Roadster Race Car

Estimated at £10,000 - £12,000

Lot details

Registration No: Unregistered
Chassis No: T.B.A
MOT: Exempt

  • Full race specification MG B, built by well-regarded MG builder/preparer John Hewitt
  • Competed regularly in the CSCC Swinging Sixties Series between 2007 and 2017, with several class poles and wins
  • Fitted with a 1950cc engine producing some 201bhp and only track-day running in since full overhaul in 2017
  • Accompanied by the body-coloured hardtop

Introduced in 1962, the MGB Roadster enjoyed an eighteen-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Based around a monocoque chassis featuring independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, its 1798cc 'B' series four-cylinder engine was allied to a four-speed manual transmission. Capable of over 100mph, the provision of front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering greatly aided control.

Built into a race car by renowned historic racing cars builder and race preparer John Hewitt, the MG was competed very successfully in his and Arto Kesterlian hands in the MGCC Cockshoot Championship with class and overall wins from the 1980s until 2005. Thereafter, competing with two brothers (and still race prepared by John during this time), it was John who brokered the sale to the vendor and his son some ten years ago, with the MG continuing competing in the CSCC Swinging Sixties Series across both ownerships (2007-2017) until the vendor's son emigrated. Again very successful during this period, the MG boasts having several class poles and wins under its belt.

Fitted with a 1950cc engine which was fully overhauled in 2017, it was shown to produce some 201bhp at that time when the dyno reading was completed after a tune carried out by Peter Burgess (another MG afficionado), Peter apparently noted it was one of the best power results he had achieved from the B Series engine. The engine features two twin 55 DCO/SP Weber carburettors fed by an enclosed airbox, the engine specification further includes a race head with aluminium rocker arms; Kent race camshaft; Omega Pistons 83.5mm; balanced crankshaft; aluminium baffled sump; uprated Cambridge Motorsport oil pump; aluminium radiator with additional air intake scoop and oil radiator; and big bore exhaust and has only seen track-day running since.

Allied to an MX-5 five-speed gearbox with lightened race flywheel, 7.25” AP racing clutch, and Quaife Limited Slip Differential, full race specification adjustable suspension is employed (including coils and dampers on the rear) with anti-roll bar front and rear. Fitted with a full roll cage, the MGB features lightweight panels and “glass”, race fuel tank, uprated fuel pump, FIA safety kit (seats, fire, lights, etc.), two sets of wheels both with Yokohama Race Tyres (one wet/one dry) and hardtop. Naturally, now requiring a new race season, recommissioning/preparation, this previously very competitive MGB still boasts its 'low track-time' freshly overhauled engine.
