Registration No: 606 GOV
Chassis No: GHN3556
MOT: Exempt
Introduced in 1962, the MGB Roadster enjoyed an eighteen-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Based around a monocoque chassis featuring independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, its 1798cc 'B' series four-cylinder engine was allied to a four-speed manual transmission. Capable of over 100mph, the provision of front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering greatly aided control.
Specially tuned MG B's including some with aluminum panels were successful in international road competition events, scoring a Grand Touring category victory in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally. Circuit racing wins included the Guards 1000 miles race at Brands Hatch in 1965 and the 84-hour Marathon de la Route at the Nürburgring in 1966. MG B's also won the GT Category in the 1966 Targa Florio, the 1966 Spa 1000 and the 1967 Spa 1000.
‘606 GOV’ was first registered in November 1962, an original right-hand drive "pull (door) handle" car. ‘606 GOV’, the registration number the car still carries and which is included in the sale (the original registration number has a standalone value), was converted to race specification in 2006 by John Palmer Engineering for the current owner using a new British Motor Heritage shell. In addition to competing in many races over the years in the UK, the car has been raced at Spa and Zandvoort. Since then, ‘606 GOV’, has been raced only by the present owner, primarily in the Equipe Race series.
Offered in FIA Appendix K competition specification (specifications for ‘Historic’ racing cars), it is eligible for a number of race series including Equipe GTS, HSCC and Ecurie Classic Racing. The Historic Technical Passport (HTP) is valid until 31st December 2033. The motorsport documentation also comprises of an MSA homologation form, the engine capacity certificate and engine specifications. Additionally, there are dated rolling-road printouts from MG Motorsport and TTP.
In 2019, the MG was fitted with a new engine by Doug Smith of MG Motorsport fame. The engine is currently sealed with the aforementioned capacity certificate present. Prepared by TTP Racing, since the engine overhaul the car has competed at only 5 meetings and has been subject to a rigorous oil change regime, changing after a maximum of 3 hours running and only using Motul 300v Competition oil. A build sheet is available.
Offered for sale mounted on Dunlop L section Tyres, ‘606 GOV’ is fitted with uprated springs front and rear, race quality, prop and driveshafts, LSD and an original ‘works’-type hardtop. The original engine plus gearbox and a collection of spares are available by separate negotiation with the vendor. The current V5C Registration Document is present plus a collection of invoices.
