A replica of the Lotus XI which won both its class and the Index of Performance at the 1957 Le Mans 24-hour race, the Westfield Eleven was also the Midlands-based manufacturer's first model. Introduced during 1982, it used a tubular-steel spaceframe chassis akin to that of the original but clothed in fibreglass rather than aluminium panelling. Widely praised for its accuracy, the Westfield Eleven was available as a 'turn key' or 'home build' proposition. Only produced until 1986 (though, the factory were selling leftover kits for some time after), the model acquired such a following that Westfield were tempted into releasing an updated version some two years ago.
Finished in British Racing Green with dark red vinyl upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (Ford RS Turbo 1600 engine, electrical equipment), "very good" (Borg Warner T5 five-speed manual gearbox, interior trim, chassis), "first class" (alloy wheels) or "new" (tyres) condition. However, he notes that the fibreglass bodywork is "crazing in places" and that the paint "needs slight attention". Reputedly built with sprint and hillclimb usage in mind, 'GAO 306K' was completed in 1997. Registered as a historic vehicle (thanks to its assumed 1972 identity), the Westfield has not been campaigned during the current ownership. Nevertheless said to "perform and handle very well" with no significant faults to the seller's knowledge, it boasts an impressive specification. Sourced from a Ford RS Turbo, its 1600cc engine apparently benefits from a "+ .5 bore size, Piper 285 camshaft, low compression pistons, roller rockers, Pace intercooler and Turbo Systems '195bhp' chip / actuator". Backed by a Borg Warner T5 gearbox, the 'two stage' turbocharged straight-four feeds it power to the back wheels via a limited slip differential (3.54:1 ratio). Reined in by Ford Cortina front disc and Ford Escort MKII back brakes, the Eleven is believed to have covered some 14,600 miles since completion. A highly convincing replica that boasts even better performance than the real thing, 'GAO 306K' is offered for sale with dark blue tonneau cover and MOT certificate valid until June 5th 2007.
