Jaguar's flagship XJ range was unveiled in September 1968, the Daimler Sovereign derivative of which first saw the light of day in October the following year as a replacement for the Sovereign 420. The Sovereign's fluted radiator grille and Daimler badging are the obvious external distinguishing features between the Daimler and Jaguar, both of which were launched with the choice of either a 2.8 or 4.2-litre version of the proven XK engine. The first major revision was introduced in the autumn of 1973. These Series II cars featured higher front bumpers (a Federal safety requirement) and correspondingly shallower radiator grille. The following year, the standard wheelbase car was discontinued and all subsequent ones produced with the previously optional longer one of 112.75in. In 1975 the 2.8-litre engine option was replaced by a 3.4-litre version of the same XK powerplant and by now a 5.3-litre V12 unit was also available. The next major facelift occurred in late 1979. The changes for these Series III cars included revised bumpers, flush door handles, the axing of the front quarter lights, a modified radiator grille and a revised roofline with correspondingly shallower glass area.
The Series III Sovereign being offered is a 1982 model fitted with the 4.2-litre engine but lacking the cruise control, air-conditioning and fog lamps usually found on the model. It boasts bronze coachwork and a brown-coloured interior. The body and paintwork are described by the vendor as "average for the year", and the interior trim as "fair". The engine and automatic transmission are said to be "good". Originally owned by Dunlop, the car appears to have been little used over the years - the service book suggesting the displayed mileage of little over 60,000 could possibly be correct. The car carries the 'ageless' number plate 'HWG 110', is MOT'd until March 2010 and taxed until the end of October this year. Sovereigns offer a unique level of luxury, cosseting occupants in a very British blend of leather and wood trim while treating them to a 'magic carpet' ride rarely if ever matched by rival marques. On a scale of comfort per pound they are now certainly hard to beat.
