Shelby's legendary Mustangs helped launch a generation of enthusiasts for the snake charmer. Beginning in 1965 with the GT350, virtually a street legal racecar, Shelby's cars offered the muscle car buyer a unique identity and loads of true american grunt. As time went on Ford and Shelby realised that by making the cars a little more comfortable and removing some of the hard edges a much larger market would emerge.
Shelby's high performance converted Ford Mustangs with the front end re-design, front guards, the bonnet and trunk in GRP and Thunderbird style rear lamps really are in a class of their own and the 1969 model was capable of 97kph in 6 seconds and 161kph in 13.9.
Originally built in the USA in 1969 as an export model, this GT500 was dispatched to Japan. By 1987 it had found its way to Australia where its sole Aussie owner restored it as closely as possible to factory specification whilst changing it to right hand drive. It was said to have covered a mere 42700 kms in 2001 which had risen to 46213 kms when entered for sale here today and this is believed to be genuine from new.
It is fully loaded with most factory options including the kilometric speedometer, power steering, air conditioning, the tilt steering column, tinted glass, push button eight-track cartridge player, full instrumentation, roll bar, racing harnesses, the deluxe interior and the fold down rear seat and still has the original owner's manual. It won, amongst others in Australia, the Most Authentic Car overall at the Calder concours and followed that with a win at the Hong Kong Classic Car Show before arriving in the UK in August 2002 since when it has had little use and only the occasional show outing. Recently some £2000 has been spent on servicing and overhauling the air-conditioning system.
In exceptional condition throughout this car is recorded in the US Shelby Register and is UK registered and is a genuine big block muscle car that would be a fairly straight forward to convert back to left hand drive.
