The Austin Rover Group's Metro first saw the light of day in 1980 and was intended as a larger alternative to the mighty Mini that was then 21 years old. Some of the Mini's proven underpinnings were carried over; not least its sub-frame mounted 998cc and 1275cc engines that drove the front wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The suspension was a version of the Allegro's Hyradgas system. The newcomer was initially just sold in three-door Hatchback form, but the packaging was good, accommodation deceptive and the ride and handling much lauded, and the model became a big seller, with a million finding homes inside the first 10 years of production. The original Austin tag was dropped at the end of 1987, the model becoming simply the Rover Metro.
Offered here is a real treat in the shape of a lovely low-mileage Rover Metro Clubman. Finished in bright Red paintwork with a Grey cloth interior and fitted with an automatic gearbox this cute little time capsule has just over 17,500 miles from new on its odometer. Although there is not a lot known of its early history, the tidy interior and very good paintwork with only minor age-related marks are a testament to its former keepers. There seems to be no obvious evidence of old welding or body repairs and it does not show any lacquer peel or notable bubbling. According to the vendor the car is very tidy underneath with only some minor surface corrosion.
It is believed that the Metro was dry-stored for a period of time before being returned to the road in 2010 after passing an MOT. Between 2012 and 2019 the Rover was part of the Jaguar Land Rover Heritage Collection, after which the Metro was further recommissioned and returned to the road once again with just 10,543 miles on the clock. Since then a further 6,800 miles were added to make a total of 17,545 at the time of consignment. Said to be driving very well with a responsive gearchange from the automatic gearbox and no creaks or rattles from the monocoque, this little giant is ready for its next enthusiast owner. Offered with a current MOT, its original owner’s handbook, a history file containing a collection of old MOTs and invoices and a full set of the original Metro hubcaps.
