Chassis No: SRH7799
MOT: June 2023
The Shadow's arrival in 1965 was none too soon and did much to reverse the notion that Rolls-Royce was falling behind the times. It resulted in many firsts for the company, including: unitary construction rather than separate body/chassis units, disc rather than drum brakes and independent rear suspension. Though shorter and narrower than the Silver Cloud III it replaced, the John Polwhele Blatchley-penned Shadow nevertheless possessed greater space for both luggage and passengers and certainly boasted far more contemporary looks. At launch it was powered by a 172bhp V8 engine of 6230cc, though this was enlarged to 6750cc during 1970. Early cars employed the same GM automatic transmission as the Silver Cloud, but this was superseded by the much-vaunted Turbo Hydramatic system from 1970 onwards. The car's famed 'magic carpet' ride was achieved courtesy of a high-pressure hydraulic system licensed from Citroen. Initially, it featured self-levelling at both ends, but this was deleted from the front in 1969. A two-door Saloon variant with coachwork by Mulliner Park Ward was made available from 1966, just 606 examples of which were produced before the model morphed into the Corniche in 1971.
This 1969 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was originally ordered through Jack Barclay for a Mr Eduard J. De Winter. However, it seems that he cancelled the order for the car and it was then delivered straight from Crewe to its first owner, Mr L.B. Thwaites with the warranty card dated 15th of December 1969. Finished in Shell Grey with a Black Connolly Vaumol hide interior, Grey Wilton carpets and Grey Ambla headlining, this Shadow was issued with the registration number ‘YMM 962H’, which it still carries today. Mr Thwaites was a loyal customer of Rolls-Royce and from the history file we learn that he traded in Silver Shadow chassis SRH5464 on this car, SRH7799. A year later he would trade in SHR7799 for SRH9747, another brand new Silver Shadow. The history file shows that Jack Barclay then sold SRH7799 to a Mr P.R. Pritchard in December 1970 and to a Mr D. Wheeler in September 1973. In April 1982 the car was acquired by a Mr H.S. Turvey before passing into the hands of the current vendor in June 2004. Invoices on file detail works carried out since 2004, including regular servicing, a new thermostat, new exhaust, exchange radiator, and works on brakes and suspension. The car was also recently resprayed in Shell Grey with a Dark Grey roof as the current vendor found that the original paintwork had lost its lustre.
Included in the extensive history file that accompanies the car, we find a current V5C, a stack of old MOTs dating back to 1976!, a collection of old tax discs dating back to 1983, a full folder from the R-REC containing copies of all the build records, Warranty Cards and correspondence from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Jack Barclay, technical drawings and invoices covering the current custodianship. At the time of consignment, SRH7799 drove well with a very smooth gear change. Her leather interior is thought to be mostly original and is described by the vendor as ‘free from tears and still nice and supple’.
