PLEASE NOTE: This lot is a 1937 Riley 12/4 Lynx Tourer and not a 9 as stated in the printed catalogue.
In the late 1920s and '30s, Riley, based in Coventry, crafted some of the finest small sporting cars globally, spanning Saloons, Tourers, and dedicated sports models. Percy Riley's famous marque really took off thanks to the 1926 Motor Show exhibited Riley Nine, the main feature of which was the engine, which became a talking point amongst the sporting motoring fraternity. For when most of the rival firms were still employing side valves, Riley's Nine engine had not one, but two camshafts, mounted high up in the cylinder block, driving inclined valves via short pushrods and rockers, and was fitted with hemispherical cylinder heads - a layout which responded well to some further power increasing tweaking. Indeed, the Thompson and Taylor team Brooklands-Nine became one of the biggest winners in British motor racing prewar. Such racetrack cred quickly rubbed off on the street models, which the 'Brooklands Crowd' bought in great numbers.
From the chassis number record this 1937 Model Year Lynx would have been manufactured before October 1937. The exterior of the Tourer is finished in rich Cream paintwork set-off by the Red brake drums behind the painted spoked wheels with knock-offs a feature revealing the Riley motorsport heritage. The radiator features the striking and scarce Riley Ski Lady mascot as fitted to Riley cars from c.1931 up to c.1937. Very collectible, although not believed fitted from new, but commissioned by the Riley Motor Club to epitomise ‘smoothness and speed’ and available from Riley agents until c.1937.
Inside, the interior wears wonderfully mature Red leather upholstery with matching Red carpets and door cards and even a matching Red soft-top cover. Some refurbishment of the interior, such as the wooden dash pieces and carpets, appear evident, yet still complementing the interior patina. The Tourer is offered with a current V5C. The ‘EGO 216’ number plate is recorded as non-transferable.
