Penned by Geoff Lawson and stylistically indebted to its XJ6 (X300) predecessor, the XJ8 (X308) was launched in 1997. Powered by a new generation of 3.2 or 4.0 litre AJ-V8 engines, it was a strong performer with the latter unit developing 290bhp and 290lbft; outputs sufficient for 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds and 150mph. Hailed by Motor Trend magazine as a ‘musclecar in a tuxedo . . . that gets sweeter by the mile’, the XJ8 4.0 is an undoubted modern classic.

Reputedly 1 of just 8,369 XJ8 4.0 cars made, chassis SAJJJALD3CH875552was supplied new by Thornes Jaguar of Wakefield. Finished in special order Antigua Blue Metallic with Cashmere leather upholstery, its impressive specification also included an XJR-style mesh grille and factory sunroof. Retained by its first owner for eighteen years, the four-seater has covered just 64,000 miles (a figure substantiated via eight service stamps). Described by the vendor as being in ‘very good’ (bodywork, paintwork, interior trim) or ‘excellent’ (4 litre V8 engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment), he further informs us that ‘T85 SBV’ is ‘lovely to drive with no known issues’.
