Introduced in August 1987, the RS500 was a limited production homologation special designed to fully realise the first generation Ford Sierra Cosworth's competition potential. Developed in conjunction with Cosworth Engineering, the newcomer's uprated 'YB' engine boasted an enlarged: water-cooled Garrett turbocharger, water pump, intercooler and oil pump not to mention a revised ECU and eight fuel injectors (four of which lay dormant on the inlet manifold plenum chamber unless energised by a specialist). Developing 224bhp as standard, the RS500 was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and 153mph. Though, tuned variants offered supercar humbling performance. As its name suggests just 500 examples of the RS500 were made. Visually distinguished by a new front spoiler, additional tailgate spoiler and 'Gurney Flap' on the main rear spoiler, the model could be had in Black, White or Moonstone Blue. Only available via ninety nominated RS specialist dealers many of whom charged a handsome premium when new, the RS500 has long been revered as the ultimate first generation Ford Sierra Cosworth derivative.
