The Excelsior company had been involved with two wheeled transport since the 1870's when the company had been founded to produce ordinary cycles and had entered motorcycle manufacture in 1896. Over the next forty years the company produced a range of machines covering the motorcycle spectrum from utility models to the beautiful and successful Manxman competition models. Following the Second World War Excelsior concentrated on the production of two stroke powered machines, some, such as the Tailisman, using engines of their own manufacture and others powered by Villiers units. The Universal U10 was introduced during 1959 as a replacement for the UB Universal released during 1957. The U10 was powered by a Villiers 31C engine equipped with a three speed gearbox housed in a full loop frame with pivoted fork rear suspension and telescopic front forks. A generously sized tool and battery box enclosed the machines mid rift and contributed to the models clean lines.
This example is described as being in good condition in all respects having been restored in the past. It is offered with a Swansea V5C, an original buff log book and the original bill of sale from September 1961 when it cost £90 plus tax and number plates.
