Lot details
Registration No: VSV 655
Chassis No: 20536120
Mot Expiry: None

Introduced in 1946, the Saurer 4MH Artillery Tractor (4 = 4-Wheeled, M = Military Vehicle, H = Rear-Engined) was designed to carry gun crews and tow either artillery pieces or ammunition trailers. Powered by a 5.3 litre, four-cylinder diesel engine allied to five-speed manual transmission, its off-road capabilities were enhanced by permanent four-wheel drive and a sophisticated differential set-up. Far nimbler than its M6 and M8 siblings, the model was updated in 1952 gaining a larger fuel tank and revised bodywork (though, the front-mounted 2.5 tonne winch was carried over unaltered). Intended to be as low-slung as possible, the Saurer was a surprisingly snug fit for front seat occupants who were sandwiched between the wheelarches. With comparatively light steering and a positive gearchange, the 4MH was reputedly easier to drive than many of its peers (albeit top speed was not a priority). A staple part of the Swiss Army's ordnance, the 4MH remained in active service until 1985. However, just 363 1952-type models are thought to have been made.

Finished in blue / grey, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, electrical equipment, chassis, bodywork and paintwork (while, he rates the wheels / tyres as "average"). Reportedly "imported to the UK from Switzerland during 1986", 'VSV 655' is believed but not warranted to be "the only one of its kind in the country". Boasting an unladen weight of 4290kg, the Saurer is further understood to retain its "original kit, snowchains etc in side locker". Treated to a "new clutch less than 10 miles ago", a fuller description of the 4MH is apparently available in the October 2007 issue of 'Military Machines International'.
