Concerned at the runaway success of Ford's pony car, the ubiquitous Mustang, General Motors brought the first generation Camaro to market in the September of 1966. It was based on a new rear-wheel drive platform and shared both that and a variety of other major components with the Pontiac Firebird. The 2+2 was available as either a two-door Coupe or Convertible and came with a choice of no less than six powerplants, from a 4.1-litre straight-six to a 6.5-litre V8, and three trim and tuning packages - RS, SS and Z28. Like Ford, Chevrolet believed the old adage that 'whatever won on Sunday sold on Monday' and wasted little time in taking to the tracks. In the US, this meant contesting the SCCA-sanctioned Trans-Am Series. Working with Roger Penske, they operated an unofficially factory-backed team, winning the title outright with Mark Donohue at the wheel.
This purposeful looking Camaro was built to a very high standard by renowned marque Porsche specialist Francis Tuthill. Once completed, it was successfully campaigned in HSCC events by Chris Pring and subsequently raced in the Top Hat, HSCC and Historic Touring Cars series, again with good results - it apparently achieved outright victory at Thruxton, a pole position at Brands Hatch and fastest laps at Donington and Thruxton. The engine was overhauled by Knight Racing Services and is claimed to produce 523bhp at 6,700rpm. The unit drives through a Muncie M.21 gearbox to a 12-bolt limited slip differential Positraction axle. The specification also includes a long distance fuel cell and there is a comprehensive spares package that can be purchased by separate negotiation. The vendor considers the bodywork and paintwork to be in "excellent" order and is selling the car with FIA HTP papers valid for class CT17. If you're looking for a Mustang eater or entrant for Bernie Chodosh's new Historic V8 Series (which starts at Snetterton on 23rd October), you've found it!
