A seamless transition from the previous 'Fintail' models, Paul Bracq's elegant and timeless W108/109 design borrowed much from the W111/112 cabriolet and coupe range which ran before it, but opened the look to a wider saloon-car buying audience. Window areas were increased, and the change meant that what appeared to be (from the front) an expensive limited production cabriolet was now a new saloon available at a cheaper price to all. Debuting at the '65 Frankfurt show, the car featured all-round independent coil-sprung suspension. Initially, 2.5 or 3.0 litre SOHC motors were offered, though a 2.8 litre 'M130' engine was introduced from 1967. It had an improved cylinder-head which cooled better owing to redesigned water jacketing and thermal transfer paths, plus an oil cooler. These changes combated extra heat created by the performance increases available when using twin carburettors or taking up the fuel injection option on the latest 2.8 litre straight-six. The car was superseded in 1972 by the flatter-looking W116 range.
This particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. The saloon is understood to have had two previous keepers in the UK and shows an unwarranted 55,388 miles to its odometer. The MOT runs until July 2010, and the VED classification is Historic. These Mercedes stemmed from the firm's period of greatest durability, and are noted for their strong construction and quality materials. They may not be the most sporty, or the most luxurious classic cars in existence but many enthusiasts revere them as one of the most intellectually pleasing cars from any era, characterised by sleek 1960s styling cues yet encapsulating the wisdom of the whole of Daimler-Benz's existence.
