Cornish rally driver Donald Healey's early cars were built at his Donald Healey Motor Company workshops in Warwickshire from 1946, his open Silverstone 2-seater sports becoming a popular choice for Britain's amateur weekend racers during the postwar period. It was in 1950 that the earlier Elliott-bodied coupes and roadsters by Westland were replaced by Tickford-coachbuilt sports saloons and convertibles from Abbott. By 1954 - before BMC started manufacturing Healey's 100 sportscar for him with Austin-Healey badging, initially as the 100/4 and later as the 100/6 and then the legendary 3000 - 222 of these closed and 77 open genuine Warwick Healeys had been produced.
This Healey was built in 1951 at Healey's Warwick workshops and is one of only 88 rolling chassis to have been bodied in period by the craftsmen of Abbott's of Farnham, this car with most attractive drophead coupe coachwork providing full 4-seater accommodation.
Both engine and gearbox were sourced from Riley of Coventry, the engine a 'Big Four' of 2443cc capacity and the manual gearbox having 4 forward speeds. The chassis and body is said to be in good condition with black paintwork also described as good and the interior in red leather and walnut original. Mechanically and electrically, it is reportedly in excellent order, and so confident of its mechanical state is the vendor that he intends to drive his characterful motor car all the way from County Durham to our Peak District auction venue.
