Laverda was established in Breganze in 1873 when Pietro laverda commenced production of agricultural equipment . In 1948 his grandson Francesco built the first Laverda motorcycle, a four stroke single displacing 74cc. Entries in events such as Milano - Taranto during the 1950's met with considerable success establishing the desirability of the lightweights, however, during the early sixties, unlike many of their rivals, Laverda recognised that the complexion of motorcycling was changing and commenced development of the machine that would establish them as one of the most desirable brands world wide. The new model, when first shown to the public, displaced 650cc although by the time it entered production the capacity had increased to 750cc. It utilised a vertical twin engine with a single overhead camshaft and unit five speed gearbox which was housed in a spine frame. The new model appeared to be heavily influenced by the Honda CB72/77 series, arguably a shrewd marketing move, given that its target market was the States where the Honda's were well regarded.
Competition involvement followed with the factory entering machines in long distance endurance events using modified production machines prior to the release of the legendary 750SFC production racer in 1971. For road riders the twin was offered in GT or SF form, the former featuring a softer state of tune intended to appeal to the touring rider whilst the SF was pitched at the sporting rider and would progress through four evolutions adopting disc brakes and eventually styling that reflected that of the Jota.
The SF offered dates from 1970 and is presented to a very high standard. Equipped with drum brakes it represents the SF in arguably its purest form when it headed the Laverda range prior to the release of the triple. A view best expressed by the closing comments of a contemporary Motorcycle Sport road test of the SF which stated that "It is the kind of machine that makes us look forward to the day eagerly ". It is offered with Spanish documentation.
