Well, here's a rare opportunity - the chance to acquire a Mercury V8 engine complete with one of only around 250 Ardun overhead valve conversions ever made. The unit was factory built by Allard in April 1950 for installation in a J2 model (chassis No.1559). It comprises a Mercury block, Ardun cast aluminium heads, twin carburettor manifold, and Allard large capacity sump. The engine number, J8311, is cast on the bellhousing, while the heads and rocker cover are stamped 952 and 6DUS respectively. The unit was acquired by the vendor c.15 years ago and, while not used, it has been regularly turned over in order to maintain the condition of the bores and gear train. Designed by brothers Yura and Zora Arkus-Duntov (later the 'father of the Chevy Corvette'), the Ardun conversion proved to be the most successful way of hot rodding a Ford or Mercury flathead V8, and was much sought after in period.
