Lot 58 - 1978 TVR Taimar

1978 TVR Taimar

Estimated at £4,500 - £5,500

Lot details
Registration No: BWY563S
Chassis No: 4201FM
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

Domesticated to the extent that it was the marque's first model to feature a full-length hatchback, the Taimar TVR broke cover at the 1976 Earls Court Motor Show. Otherwise nigh-on identical to its 3000M sibling in terms of both styling and engineering, the newcomer utilised the same multi-tubular backbone chassis equipped with all-round independent coil and wishbone suspension, front anti-roll bar, disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering. Credited with developing some 142bhp and 172lbft of torque, its lusty Ford 'Essex' 2994cc OHV V6 engine drove the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds and 120mph, the model was justly praised by the contemporary motoring press for its strong performance and fine handling. Only in production for three years, just 395 Taimars are thought to have been made.
Finished in black with silver banding and black / grey leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its 2994cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Proof that properly maintained TVRs are able to provide years of reliable service, 'BWY 563S' is said to have covered an impressive 231,030 miles from new. Though, we understand that its engine was (a) renewed in August 1996 and (b) given an overhaul the following February. A busy year, 1997 also saw the Taimar being fettled by 'Classic Car Interiors' who apparently paid particular attention to its seats, console and carpets. Reportedly accompanied by bills dating from July 7th 1987 to the present day (some sixty-one in total) and a succession of MOT certificates encompassing the same period, the TVR rides on Wolfrace-type alloy wheels. A handsome yet practical 1970s sportscar, it is hoped that 'BWY 563S' will possess a new MOT certificate by the time of sale.
