1968 Morgan 4/4 1600 Competition Model

Estimated at £22,000 - £28,000

Lot details
Registration No: KFY 44F
Chassis No: B1651
Mot Expiry: July 2012

Introduced in March 1968, the '1600' was notable as the first Morgan 4/4 model to offer 100mph plus performance. Based around a box-section chassis equipped with independent 'sliding pillar' front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes, its traditionally constructed thin-gauge metal over ash bodywork contributed towards a commendably low kerb weight (circa 700kg). True to the marque practice of using proprietary running gear, the newcomer was powered by a Ford-sourced 1599cc four-cylinder `crossflow' engine allied to four-speed all-synchromesh manual transmission. Initially available in basic or 'Competition Model' guises, the latter's Ford 1600GT (86bhp) unit was standardised during 1971. With its evocative styling, characterful interior and involving driving experience, the 4/4 1600 proved a beguiling proposition.

Finished in British Racing Green with Burgundy hide upholstery, this particular example was painstakingly restored during the mid 1980s by marque enthusiast Colin Bruce. A founder member of CrumMog which subsequently became the present day FolkMog, his initials were posthumously added to the FolkMog car badge (he came up with the design but died before the emblem had been finalised). Entrusted to the respected Morgan concessionaire F.H. Douglass of London by Mr Bruce's family in 1996, `KFY 44F' was advertised as "a rare Competition Model of which it is thought only 90 were built". Details relating to the F.H. Douglass sale remain on file as does an engineer's valuation report from Morgan specialists Colin Musgrove & Associates which concluded the two-seater was "one of the best examples of an early 1600 4/4 we have seen". Some several years and 24,000 miles later (the odometer currently shows some 58,000 unwarranted miles), `KFY 44F' is described by the vendor thus: "This lovely car is possibly the best driving Morgan my wife and I have encountered which considering that we have a collection of Morgans including two Super Sports shows the remarkable standard expected and achieved by Colin Bruce". Riding on 60-spoke wire wheels, this rare 4/4 1600 Competition Model also sports a wooden dashboard, original factory steering wheel, rev counter, new black soft-top, tonneau cover, luggage grid, original Morgan owner's handbook, twin-choke Weber carburettor, four-branch manifold, mesh headlight guards, Lucas spotlights, sidescreens and wind deflectors. Recent outings have included a trip to Belgium and a trouble-free classic car rally. Currently taxed and tested, it is intended that `KFY 44F' will be driven to the sale from the Bristol area.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has 12 months MOT and 11 months road tax.
