The Austin A40 was unveiled at the 1958 London Motor Show. Penned by Pininfarina (and generally referred to as the Farina A40 to distinguish it from previous models of the same moniker), it was the replacement for the A35, with which it shared many mechanical components. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and live axle at the rear, and power was initially supplied by a 948cc version of the ubiquitous BMC A-Series engine. The MKII version introduced in 1961 featured more passenger space courtesy of a four-inch increase in wheelbase. The engine output grew too, from 34bhp to 48bhp, courtesy of an increase in capacity to 1098cc. A naturally good handling model, the A40 quickly won its spurs on track and rally stage alike, and has long since proved a popular weapon of choice in historic motorsport too.
This particular left-hand drive MKII example is a fully-fledged race car that was previously campaigned in the Scandinavian championship. It is reportedly equipped with a freshly-built 1293cc engine of 101bhp and comes complete with: Appendix K FIA papers and spare 1098cc engine (as run at the Silverstone Classic), straight-cut gearbox, brake discs etc. A very affordable competition car that is potentially eligible for the Top Hat, U2TC and FIA Masters series etc.
PLEASE NOTE: The chassis number for this vehicle is A-A258L-7453.
