Beginning life as a Saloon or Limousine, this imposing Sunbeam is understood to have acquired its current lightweight Tourer coachwork – which was reputedly first fitted to a Lagonda – in circa 1970. Retaining its original 25hp running gear, the four-seater is powered by a 3.6 litre OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission. Semi-elliptic springs up front are complemented by cantilever springs to the rear and the four-wheel drum brakes enjoy a degree of servo assistance. Boasting much the same road presence as a WO Bentley costing ten times as much, ‘RM 6740’ has been ‘breathed on’ with a bespoke inlet manifold hosting triple SU carburettors. Other modifications include the addition of an alternator, coil ignition and a facet fuel pump. However, the original Autovac, dynamo and magneto all remain in situ should a new owner wish to reinstate them. Belonging to its previous keeper for twenty-one years, the Sunbeam was looked after during that time by James Hewing of Haslemere. Reportedly treated to some £9,000 worth of expenditure during 2017-2018 including the installation of a new 4.0:1 crown wheel and pinion and replacement half shafts, the Tourer is described by the seller as being in ‘good overall’ condition with regards to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, bodywork and paintwork.
