The L28 was, according to BSA sales brochure of the time "similar to the 3.49hp OHV but has special features that should appeal to the rider who requires a fast reliable machine for general competition work. It was this model that, fitted with a BSA No.9 sidecar, made such a splendid performance in the 1927 International Six Days Trial, being the only 3.49hp combination to secure a gold medal". The motorcycle employed enclosed rockers and was offered with the option of high compression piston that could be installed as standard or supplied with the motorcycle in the tool kit together with two spare valve springs. The sales publicity made special mention of the "special plated exhaust system" that gave a "mellow note at all speeds without loss of efficiency". A three speed, hand operated gearbox and all chain drive took the power to the rear wheel. A 5 ½ inch front brake was complimented by a 7 inch unit at the back. Ignition was provided by a chain driven magneto and an Amac carburettor was fitted with either a twist grip or lever control.
This machine was rebuilt during 2010 to L28 Super Sport specification. The vendor informs us that "all engine internals are new" as is the carburettor, tyres, chains etc. all being renewed during the restoration. The magneto was rewound at the time of the rebuild and the vendor informs us that the machine "runs perfectly".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
