This Michelotti-designed luxury sportscar was one of the most desirable vehicles on sale in the UK when introduced. It still is today, and though Stags carry a reputation for poor reliability, the truth is different: a sorted example from a caring owner should be no less reliable than any other classic, as long as coolant and oil levels are diligently maintained. This car is from an owner who bought it in 1985. It is a 1974 MKII introduced from '73 and features the sealed cooling system modifications that Triumph made, plus the sharpened steering and re-designed dashboard, while the engine changed to domed pistons and a reshaped combustion chamber. The Stag moniker was originally the project's codename, but was loved by Triumph dealers so much prior to launch that it became official. Almost 26,000 Stags were made, with a quarter exported to North America during 1971-73. The Stag Owners Club for which this car qualifies reports around 9,500 cars survive, and there is really no other British open four-seater that provides the same fulfilment. Manual gearbox cars are considerably rarer than the automatics, and many Stags out there have lost their hardtops. This car is still complete with hard- and soft-tops present, and has the sweet four-speed manual `box.
The vendor describes the car as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, bodywork and paintwork, while he rates the electrical equipment as "satisfactory" and the possibly original interior trim as "slightly worn and comfortable". Upgrades have been made to the ignition, which is now electronic, and to the exhaust which is a long-life stainless steel system. The hood is recent, onto a re-conditioned hood frame, and the car is said to "run well". A BMIHT Heritage certificate is present with the car, identifying a build date of 31st August 1973, and the Stag is presented in its original colours - Mimosa outside and Chestnut Ambla inside. Alloy wheels are fitted, which includes the spare. The tax expires at the end of December 2009, with an MOT running until January 2010. For enjoying al fresco summer motoring with a V8 soundtrack in a comfortable four-seater classic, there's still nothing to beat the panache of a Stag.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
