The late sixties were marked by huge increase in interest in motorcycling as a leisure activity in the United States, for many this meant moto cross, desert racing or simply trail riding. Prospective participants were faced with a dilemma in respect of machine choice, for committed enthusiasts there was a plethora of dedicated European competition machines such as a Husqvarna or Bultaco, or large capacity British singles or twins such as the Triumph Trophy which could be adapted to a particular need using parts listed as options by the manufacturer. Japanese manufacturers offered various lightweight two stroke trail bikes that were fine for trail use but had no competition potential due to their road origins. Yamaha's US branch approached the problem by developing the DT1. Built from the outset as a dual purpose machine, it employed a single cylinder two stroke 250cc engine housed in a set of suitable cycle parts. In standard form it could be used to commute during the week and for trail riding at the weekend. As the rider's ability increased it would provide a competitive machine in club level enduro events or desert racing, however with the addition of the GYT kit (Genuine Yamaha Tuning Kit) it could be turned into a competitive scrambler or desert racer capable of meeting the demands of the most experienced rider.
The example offered has recently been imported from the United States where it had been restored to an exceptional standard. Presented in "catalogue" specification it is offered Vat and Duty paid in the United Kingdom.
