After a sensational but costly F1 debut season, Eddie Jordan decided that the best way forward was to form an alliance with a major engine manufacturer rather than use 'down specced' customer powerplants. With technical director Gary Anderson working on a new car that incorporated a sequential gearchange, he succeeded in luring Yamaha away from Brabham.
Buoyed by the arrival of new sponsor Sasol (a South African oil and lubricants company) not to mention the signing of experienced drivers Stefano Modena and Mauricio Gugelmin, the Sasol Jordan Yamaha team embarked upon the 1992 season with a fair degree of confidence.
Sadly, the Jordan 192 was to be plagued by a series of engine and gearbox problems that severely hampered development. Essentially as well balanced a design as its 191 predecessor, the new Jordan never fulfilled its potential. Constantly on the back foot, the team battled hard throughout the year but were rewarded with only a single Championship point which came when Modena finished sixth at the final round in Adelaide.
Almost as impressive and a tribute to his dogged persistence was Gugelmin's run to seventh at Imola (the closest he would come to a points scoring position aboard the Jordan 192). An ex-race chassis, this particular example (192/01) was reportedly driven by Gugelmin in both the South African and Mexican Grand Prix. Still finished in Sasol colours but lacking an engine, it is offered for sale with a written statement of originality from Eddie Jordan to the new owner.
