The most desirable of all Porsche 911s is the 1972 created Carrera RS, which was developed from the 911S as the basis for the Stuttgart manufacturer's participation in the international under 3-litre class. Straight out of the box, it could not only win on circuits and stages, but also be user-friendly in traffic.
The 2.7-litre, fuel-injected, horizontally-opposed, 6-cylinder, air-cooled motor was the largest used in the tail of a roadgoing Porsche, capable of reaching 60mph in just over 5 seconds and achieving a 158mph top speed. The model was snapped up by 1580 buyers. Although some were rare, like the RSH, Racing (Code M491) or Sport (Code M471) intended for competition, most were produced in Touring (Code M472) guise. As often the case with Porsches, it is not uncommon to find variations in trim, colour and equipment. Many owners have retro-fitted Webers.
On offer today is a left-hand drive, Touring-spec car with factory-fit electric sunroof, lightweight front and rear valences and model-correct ducktail, which resided in a Lancashire enthusiast's collection for fifteen years before being acquired by the vendor at one of our 2001 auctions. Since then it has hardly been driven, the odometer reading a believed to be genuine 92,444 miles when entered. White paintwork and black interior are reportedly good, it has Bilsteins and Fuchs alloys, and the engine was last rebuilt by the last owner. No serious collection should be without one of these definitive 911s.
