1983 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection - Allard Turbo Conversion

Estimated at £3,000 - £4,000

Lot details
Registration No: TBO333Y
Chassis No: WFOOXXGAECDK64721
Mot Expiry: May 2011

Launched at the 1981 Geneva Salon, the Capri 2.8 Injection was Ford of Europe's penultimate take on its parent company's Mustang `personal car' concept. Retaining the sharp styling that had marked out the stylish two-door coupe since its inception in 1969 as `The Car You Always Promised Yourself', the newcomer was powered by a Bosch fuel-injected version of the smooth `Cologne' V6 engine. All Capris had been German-built from 1976, but this new top-performance version was the first job signed off by the newly-established Ford Special Vehicle Engineering department, replacing the legendary AVO. That meant faithful handling from lower, stiffer springs and Bilstein dampers, together with standard power steering to guide the fat 205/60x13 tyres, the complete package developed under the watchful eye of Ford career man and ex-racer Rod Mansfield, who has said that the 2.8i was the best car SVE produced. The 2.8 Injection found fans among lovers of Fast Fords, being the natural successor to the gutsy 3-litre `big Capris'. Production ended in 1986.

Finished in Cardinal Red with Recaro Black leather upholstery (piped in red), this rather special example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, five-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, bodywork and paintwork. Reportedly treated to a turbocharger conversion by Allard Motors of Monmouth when still quite new, `TBO 333Y' is further understood to play host to such high-performance goodies as four-pot front brake callipers and A-frame bolstered rear suspension. Apparently benefiting from a professional engine overhaul some 30,000 miles ago which included: "a Kent oil pump, Kent camshaft, bored block (to circa 2900cc), skimmed cylinder heads and low compression pistons", more recent work has seen the coupe undergo some "light recommissioning". Said to have been featured in a three-page Fast Ford magazine article and showing an unwarranted 106,547 miles to its odometer, this intriguing Capri is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until 18th May 2011.
