Introduced at the 1959 New York Motor Show, the Daimler SP250 had a very transatlantic feel to it. While its prominent tailfins, fibreglass bodywork and ''hemi' V8 engine all carried a distinct American echo, its narrow 5ft 0.5in track stance and understated interior were typically British. Built on a traditional cruciform-braced ladder-frame chassis equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, it was the SP250's advanced powerplant and strong performance that intrigued the contemporary motoring press. Designed by Ed Turner, whose other work had included the legendary Ariel Square Four and various Triumph vertical twins, the SP250's engine was remarkable for its power (140bhp, 155lbft of torque), low weight and refinement. Credited by the 'Motor' magazine with a top speed of 123.7mph, the SP250 (or Dart to give it its pre-production code) was only in production until 1964 by which time a mere 2,500 had been made.
Finished in blue with light grey leather upholstery, this particular example is thought to have undergone an extensive restoration during the late 1980s (or so the vendor was informed by its previous keeper). Sadly, there is no documentation on file to support the latter's claim that work included "an engine overhaul, repaint and chassis repairs as necessary". Apparently "a home market B-specification car" that retains its "original registration number", '642 DYX' is said to have been "dry stored in a garage" between 1994 and April 2007. Sporting a "good hood (faded), tonneau, hood bag, stainless exhaust, copper brake pipes, full bumpers, heater / demister and Kenlowe fan", the Daimler rides on steel wheels. Reportedly "building oil pressure when cranked over on the starter", it is nevertheless in need of recommissioning and a respray.
PLEASE NOTE: The present owner has recently (the invoice is dated 5th July 2007) submitted the car for mechanical work by K&S Engineering. The engine is now running and the clutch has been freed and many new parts fitted. It runs very well with very good oil pressure.
PLEASE NOTE: We apologise but this vehicle is withdrawn from the 25th July auction.
