Lot details

Registration No: RKG 304Y
Chassis No: SRH22355
MOT: Exempt

  • A sought-after, late Series I 'flared wheel arch' model (designed to accommodate radial tyres)
  • Finished in the striking combination of Shell Grey over Red interior
  • A very solid project in need of minor mechanical work
  • Supplied with copies of the original build sheets and warranty card

Launched in 1965, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a bold departure for the Crewe company. Their first monocoque design, it also benefited from olio-pneumatic rear suspension, power disc brakes and GM's silken 400 series automatic gearbox (though, the latter was not adopted until 1968). Such 'new technology' did not encroach on the luxurious interior with its sumptuous leather hides, rich wood veneers and deep lambswool carpets. Performance from the smooth 6230cc V8 engine (upgraded to 6750cc in 1970) was assured, the car wafting forward on a seemingly unstoppable wave of torque. Still immensely cosseting to drive, Shadows offer a genuinely different ownership experience to their mass-produced peers.

According to copies of the original warranty cards supplied in the history file, chassis 22355 was first supplied to A.J.C Harrison on the Isle of Jersey by the supplying dealer, St. Helier Garages and registered as 47530. The car was originally specified in the attractive colour combination of Shell Grey over a Red Leather interior. Strangely, it is understood that the car was originally ordered for the Australian market but the order was transferred to the Isle of Jersey prior to being built. Little is known of the history during its life in the Channel Islands but it is understood to have been registered on the UK mainland in 1982 and was therefore allocated with the 'Y' suffix registration number that it retains today. The V5C suggests two previous keepers prior to the vendor who has owned the car since 2014 in a private collection of Rolls Royce and Bentley motorcars.

On inspection, it was noted that the car appears to have received some treatment to its paintwork at some point as the famous red coach stripe has not been reinstated. The paintwork is in overall 'good' shape according to the vendor with small signs of age to be expected, such as along the tops of the door skins where a minor amount of corrosion has shed some paint. The bodywork however appears to be in an overall solid condition and appears to have been well treated throughout its life. Although the car has not been on the road for some years, the engine appeared to fire into life quickly and settled to a steady idle with no audible signs of hydraulic lifter fatigue, a common problem on these cars. The vendor noted an oil leak and a warning light on the dash for this issue is present. From sitting, the car suffers from some level of brake binding which would need to be rectified and it is for these issues that the vendor states that some level of recommissioning must take place prior to use. We are of the belief that a good service of all fluids would be of major benefit to this potentially very fine motorcar. The crowning part of this car is that the interior is in a lovely state of maturity with the leather having reached a particular tone that caring usage brings. There is some cracking to the colour but no rips and sagging to note. The carpets and woodwork are also aged (with the door cappings perhaps requiring some refurbishment) however they are still very much up to the task.

Now offered at No Reserve by the vendor, this particular Silver Shadow presents a fantastic opportunity to simply recommission and use whilst being improved gradually and will make a very fine motorcar indeed.
