BMW's re-working of the `neu-Klasse' into the shorter wheelbase, narrow track 1600-2 range conferred a new sporting meritocracy to the baby BMW. The car was introduced in March 1966, and received constant development and updating throughout its life. Enthusiasts split these differences into three broad ranges, early cars built until 1971, `model 71' cars built until 1973, and `model 73' versions made until the range was deleted in 1975. The 2002 came about as a result of Sales Director Paul Hahnemann supporting a proposal for the 02 range to receive the engine from the 2000CS to satisfy the US market's hunger for a high performance variant of the model. The Touring version was first made available in 1971 and gave a useful boost to the range with a 3-door hatchback body-style, adding practicality to the load-carrying ability of the model.

Whilst built in 1973, this Chamonix White car is part of the `model 71' run, so features the earlier, prettier grille and circular rear lamps. It has been on static display as part of a private Lake District collection for many years. Although reported to have been driven into the collection building under its own power, the Touring is currently a non-runner and will require re-commissioning prior to road use. Loose fit front seat covers are installed, and mileage showing is an unverified 62,363. Sold strictly as viewed it is accompanied by V5 / V5C Registration Documents, and was seemingly acquired by the vendor on 1st March 1984. A MOT certificate dated 22nd March 1984 is also available.
