The most prestigious marque in the Rootes Empire, Humber launched its first mid-sized 'executive saloon' in 1963. Intended to compete with the likes of the Ford Corsair, Triumph 2000 and Rover P6, the newcomer's wrap-over windscreen, quad headlamps and prominent grille lent it a distinctive air. Built around a monocoque bodyshell equipped with independent coil-over front suspension, a 'live' rear axle, Burman recirculating ball steering and disc / drum brakes, it was powered by a 1592cc four-cylinder OHV engine allied to four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission (the latter working on both 3rd and 4th gears). With a respectable 80bhp and 91lbft of torque on tap, the four-door saloon was reputedly capable of 90mph. As well as an efficient heater / ventilation system, imposing dashboard, passenger armrests and independently adjustable front seats, the Humber's well-appointed cabin boasted a rev-counter in keeping with its 'Sportsmanlike Performance'. Somewhat expensive to build, the Sceptre MKI gave way to a cheapened MKII version in late 1965 (though, not before 17,011 sales had been notched up).
Finished in Metallic Bronze with Rich Beige upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (chassis), "very good" (engine, gearbox, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (interior trim) order. Reportedly unusual because of both its single-tone livery and Metallic Bronze hue, '508 JWD' is further understood to have been "collected from Ryton on 6th January 1964 by its first owner and kept until 5th February 2001". A rare survivor made doubly so by its condition, the Humber boasts "a recent clutch, stainless steel exhaust, fresh MOT and tax disc". A faulty fuel gauge aside, this charming Sceptre MKI is said to be "ready to enjoy".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
