The Paul Bracq designed W108/109 Series Mercedes-Benz Saloons manufactured from 1965 to 1972 replaced the top-end models of the `Fintail' era. Of steel monocoque construction, they featured fully independent suspension and disc brakes all-round and manual or power-assisted recirculating ball steering. The initial engine line-up was based on that of the outgoing W111 model, but in 1968, the 2.5-litre unit was superseded by a 2.8-litre version that delivered 160bhp in the Bosch fuel-injected 280SE.
Offered without reserve, this Mercedes-Benz 280SE was delivered new to its first and believed only Australian owner in 1970. Finished in a Dark Maroon with a Cream upholstery, the car was fitted with an automatic transmission, a Becker Grand Prix radio and Smiths air conditioning. After having been imported into the UK in 2016 where it was registered the following year, the 280SE underwent a comprehensive engine overhaul costing £4,567.79 and full refurbishment of the wood trim. Showing 75,152 kilometres (46,970 miles) at its last MOT in November 2018, the Mercedes has since been kept dry stored and would benefit from some light recommissioning. The previous vendor graded the bodywork, paintwork, upholstery, straight-six engine and automatic transmission as all being in `very good' order in 2018. The 280SE is offered with a current V5C, a variety of maintenance receipts, plus photos of the engine restoration.
