Delivered to Park Ward on May 19th 1960, chassis BC88AR was specified with a heavy gauge frame, power operated hood and power assisted steering. 1 of just 63 right-hand drive Bentley S2 Continentals to wear the London firm's elegant 'jet age' drophead coupe coachwork (styled by Vilhelm Koren to design number 991), the four-seater took some six months to complete. Issued with a guarantee on December 2nd 1960 and road registered as '570 BYS', it was supplied new via Clyde Autos Ltd of Glasgow to shipping magnate Hugh C. Stenhouse OBE. Resident in America for many years where owners included John Purcell of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, chassis BC88AR was repatriated by renowned collector William Bateman of Lindale. Still finished in its original livery of Willow Gold with Magnolia leather upholstery, the Bentley showed an unwarranted 72,962 miles to its odometer when MOT tested during January 2002. Acquired by its previous keeper - Richard Parkinson of Windermere - the following month, the S2 Continental was promptly despatched to classic car specialist Ivydene of Crewe for an extensive two-year restoration.
Treated to new outer sills and steel / aluminium repairs as necessary, the bodywork reportedly took some 391 hours to refurbish. Though, the heavy gauge frame and underside were found to have survived very well. Showing good compressions, the engine gained a reconditioned water pump, new hoses and rejuvenated sump baffles. The automatic transmission was judged to be similarly healthy requiring no more than servicing and adjustment back to factory settings by Autolock of Crewe. A new power steering box was installed and the front / rear suspension thoroughly overhauled (new bushes / seals / fulcrum pins, replacement rear springs, revitalised shock absorbers). Attention was also paid to the braking system (new master cylinders / hoses, refurbished brake drums), differential (overhauled) and propshaft (balanced). The interior woodwork was refinished by P&A Cooper of Crewe, while Hamptons of Bridgnorth retrimmed the interior in Oxblood Connolly hide with matching Wilton carpets and over carpets. The power hood mechanism was checked over and the hood renewed in Dark Blue mohair with Beige West of England cloth headlining. Resprayed in Cobalt Blue Metallic, the four-seater also benefited from new front / rear bumper blades and sundry re-chroming by Derby Plating.
Entering the current ownership some three years ago at an indicated but unwarranted mileage of 74,712, chassis BC88AR has since added a further 7,000 miles to its odometer including a memorable one-day, 800-plus mile European blat. As well as rewiring '570 BYS' for the vendor, Padgett Motor Engineers - 'The leading authority on R-Type Bentley Continentals' - have also carried out a degree of servicing and maintenance work. Starting readily upon inspection and performing well during a recent test drive, the four-seater remains highly presentable some nine years and less than 10,000 miles after Ivydene completed its restoration. Decidedly rare and undeniably elegant, this 'aristocratic' Bentley S2 Continental is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, copy US title document, MOT certificate valid until May 4th 2014, RREC copy chassis cards, Ivydene invoices, Flying Spares bills and Padgett Motor Engineers receipts etc.
