Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1979, the new W126 S-class was a quantifiable improvement over its W116 predecessor. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press as the 'best car in the world', it was not only lighter than its forebear but also offered an improved ride and sharper handling. Styled by Bruno Sacco, its sleek silhouette hid all round independent suspension, disc brakes, power assisted steering and a range of powerful all alloy V8 engines (later supplemented by more fuel efficient straight-sixes). Still a staple part of many a diplomatic fleet, the W126 remains sought after to this day thanks to its impeccable build quality and timeless lines.

Finished in Navy Blue with grey upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition. A long wheelbase model, we are informed that it has only recently been released from the UK service of His Highness The Amir of Qatar. Stated to have covered just 17,000kms (approximately 10,500 miles) from new, the Mercedes-Benz is as well appointed as one might expect given its exulted former occupant. As well as an electric sunroof / windows / mirrors / seats, automatic transmission, ABS brakes, air-conditioning, central locking and rear blinds / side curtains the 500 SEL boasts a sophisticated timer-controlled heating system that is able to maintain a given temperature for up to twelve hours. Riding on correct-type alloy wheels, it is hoped but not guaranteed that this ultra-low mileage 500 SEL will have been transferred from diplomatic to regular UK registration plates by the time of sale.
