Austin employed the Cambridge moniker for its car range from 1954 through to 1969. The line began with the A40 and A50 - monocoque-bodied, four-door saloons with independent front suspension that jointly served as a replacement for the A40 Somerset, and were powered by 1.2-litre (A40) or 1.5-litre (A50) versions of the BMC B-Series engine respectively. The A50 gave way to the A55 in 1957. Though propelled by the same B-Series unit, it was now blessed with a higher compression ratio. The body had been restyled too, endowing the model with a bigger boot and larger rear window. It has also been lowered courtesy of 13-inch diameter wheels, while a two-tone paint finish was a popular new option. When tested by Motor magazine in 1957, a De Luxe A55 equipped with automatic transmission achieved a 0-60mph time of 27 seconds and a top speed of just over 77mph.
The right-hand drive A55 offered is a 1958 model finished in Grey teamed with a Red interior. The vendor tells us that the 34,000 miles displayed is genuine and that, following a recent respray, the Austin has "excellent" bodywork and paintwork, "genuine" interior trim, and "mint" engine and gearbox. We also gather it will have a fresh MOT by the time of the sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
