Introduced to the UK market in 1981, the Starion Turbo was intended to compete with the likes of the Toyota Celica, Mazda RX-7, and Porsche 924. Built around a two-door monocoque shell, its advanced specification included all-round independent suspension (MacPherson strut front, coil-sprung rear), ventilated disc brakes (later available with single-channel ABS), power-assisted steering, and a limited-slip differential. Benefiting from a new water-cooled turbocharger on either a 2.0-litre or 2.6-litre straight-four engine, and allied to a five-speed manual gearbox, it endowed the Starion with ferocious acceleration (Autocar magazine recording 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds, 0-100mph in 18 seconds, and 140mph flat out during a 22nd May 1985 road test). A regular sight in the 1980s Group A and Group N circuit racing, the Mitsubishi was driven to numerous victories by Colin Blower and Dave Brodie, while Pentti Arikkala used one to finish second behind Jimmy McRae in the 1988 British Rally Championship.
This Starion EX was manufactured in 1988 and first UK registered in August that year. Finished in Mexico Red with a Black leather interior. This 2.0-litre example has been in current ownership since 2016 and has covered a total of 99,500 miles from new with only six former keepers. ‘F938 WVG’ is presented today with the original Mitsubishi factory cassette and radio in working order and five-spoke alloy wheels. Supplied new by Greenways Mitsubishi Garage in Norwich, the car is offered with the original dealer wallet that includes the stamped service book and continuation sheet, a large collection of past MOTs, and several invoices, as well as a V5C. Benefitting from a new exhaust manifold in 2020 and a new timing belt around 2 years ago, the Starion has also been fitted with the aftermarket options of a custom stainless steel exhaust system, Bluetooth unit, Sterling alarm system, and immobiliser. Offered with a small spares package including a scarce third brake light (as per USA specification) for fitment in the rear spoiler.
