Gilera is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer founded in Arcore in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera and still in existence today after the company was purchased by the Piaggio group in 1969. After World War II, Gilera dominated Grand Prix motorcycle racing, winning the 500 cc road racing world championship six times in eight years, but after facing a downturn in motorcycle sales due to the increase in the popularity of automobiles after the war, Gilera made a gentleman's agreement with the other Italian motorcycle makers to quit Grand Prix racing after the 1957 season. From the mid-thirties, Gilera developed a range of four-stroke engined machines ranging from 100cc to 500 cc, the most famous being the 1939 Saturno designed by Giuseppe Salmaggi. After a few years of inactivity, Gilera returned to the sports bike market with the Saturno Nuovo, developed as a joint venture between Gilera engineer Sandro Colombo and Japanese designer N Hagiwara with the machine being a pleasing mix of Latin emotion and Japanese functionality. Despite being intended for the far east only, the Saturno did eventually reach the rest of the world, going on sale during the latter part of 1988. The 'GBM Isle of Man' version was a limited edition featuring upswept twin exhaust, hand made catch tanks and Marvic wheels.

This 1993 example has been imported from Japan and first registered in the UK in January 2021 on a V5C and is MOTd until March 2023. Featuring some high value components such as the Forcella Italia quick wheel release front forks, Brembo front brake caliper, cast iron front disc and Marvic wheels all adding up to under 300lbs weight, it has got to be one of the best handling bikes of the era. Now fitted with a flat slide carb and a more modern rear disc and caliper, the original items come supplied with the bike. An opportunity to acquire a rare limited edition and exciting bike from an iconic manufacturer.
