The Yamaha Motor Co was formed in 1955 as the powered vehicle division of the massive Yamaha Corporation more famous for making musical instruments. The first bike produced in 1954 was the YA-1, like the BSA Bantam a copy of the German made DKW RT125 but in typical Japanese fashion this was soon improved upon with the launch of the YA-2 in 1957. This proved to be an immediate success in sporting events starting a long tradition of achievement that goes on to this day in Moto GP. The arrival of the RD range in the seventies cemented Yamahas reputation for high performance two strokes and the launch of the LC 250 and 350 models in 1980 revolutionised medium capacity motorcycling. The famous Pro-Am televised race series made for exciting and sometimes frightening Saturday afternoon viewing and kickstarted the careers of many a famous racer such as Niall Mackenzie and even Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill.
This LC in classic 'Mars Bar' colours was first registered new in 1984. It is not a matching numbers bike but both frame and engine numbers begin with ‘4L0’ and is the tie-bar type, so looks to be a genuine UK market RD350LC that's had an engine swap at some time. The machine was treated to a thorough restoration by a professional engineer between 2011 and 2015, with all items repaired or renewed as required. The tie-bar type engine has the correct late-type cylinder barrels, the bores are standard size (64.00mm) having never been re-bored and the cylinder ports are standard and have never seen a die-grinder. The crank was re-built by PJ Motorcycle Engineers, new Japanese Mitaka pistons and rings fitted with a squish clearance set to 1.8mm and all engine and gearbox bearings and seals replaced, as were the clutch plates. The carbs and reed valves are the correct 4L0-01 specification and the oil pump checked for output capacity. The frame was checked to be true and then zinc phosphated and powder-coated Gloss Black with taper roller steering bearings fitted. The fuel tank was repaired and re- painted by Metal Magic and the fork stanchions hard chromed and re-ground by A.M.Philpot Ltd. The bike comes fitted with the correct standard exhausts, centre stand, toolbox, toolkit and bag with strap, full mudguards front and rear, chassis to engine tie-bars and a complete airbox assembly with all 16 components. The only mods made to make the bike more rideable are stainless 3-piece brake hoses, Hagon fork springs and a Hagon rear shock. Supplied with a current V5C and MOT’d until the 2nd of October 2023, and has not covered many miles since the rebuild and the owner reports it 'runs exactly as it should'.
