The first generation US-built Ford Probe referenced the `Probe' series of futuristic concept vehicles developed by Ford and Ghia in the 1970s. Initial variants were produced jointly by Ford and Mazda under the AutoAlliance International banner at Flat Rock, Michigan in a new $550 million facility. The Probe used MX-6 and Mazda 626 coupe components on the Mazda GD platform from 1988-1992. It was expected to replace the Mustang in the buying public's affections and there were even plans to bring it to the UK as a new Capri, but during the eight-year run of GD and then GE (1993-1997 model year) cars, only 837,273 were built, which in Ford terms made it an unsuccessful foray into the coupe market. In the United States, the Probe was available in GL, LX, and GT trim, and the example offered here is the top spec GT variant. Equipment levels were lavish, with air-conditioning even on base GL cars. The LX pack added electric windows, central locking and electric mirrors, with an optional `moonroof', while a V6 140bhp was also an option.

The GT had all the previous kit, and additionally featured a 2.2 litre turbocharged and intercooled 145bhp inline four, with ABS on the four wheel disc brakes and three way adjustable damping. The Probe was awarded a four star crash rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, until that point one of the highest awarded in the `States. All Probes, while described as coupes are 3-door hatchbacks, and so provide a supremely economical and practical experience as American cars go. Used as a static exhibit at the Haynes Museum, this as yet UK-unregistered example retains its USA `pink slip', and has covered an indicated 40527 miles. The car is left hand drive. Re-commissioning will be necessary to ensure successful UK registration and use. To diligently do that will afford a new owner the experience of driving a rarely-seen US motor, and in effect, riding in a car that indeed looks similar to the concept vehicles its shape was based upon.
