Having launched the technically refined MKX in 1961, Jaguar was concerned that the perennial MKII might seem outmoded by comparison, so set about creating a more sophisticated and luxurious version to address the problem. Called the S-Type, it was available with either 3.4 or 3.8-litre twin carburetter versions of the ubiquitous XK DOHC straight-six engine and sold from 1963 to 1968. The visual differences included: longer rear bodywork and extended rear roofline, which gave rise to a larger boot and more rear seat headroom respectively; slimline bumpers front and rear; deeper rear mudguards in place of the MKII spats. The major technical change was the adoption of independent rear suspension (an adaptation of the MKX system) in place of the MKII's live axle, though the newcomer also featured a higher-geared Burman power steering set up and an updated heating and ventilation system. The more sumptuous interior included a MKX style walnut fascia and wider front seats etc.

This particular example is believed but not warranted to have covered a mere 29,000 miles from new in the hands of just three owners. Remarkably original, 'EPY 400C' was first registered to Edward Dutton of Scarborough on 21st September 1965 and is understood to have recorded some 20,342 miles in his care before passing to its second keeper during November 1973. Said to have been stored under cover ever since, the Jaguar was purchased by the vendor from renowned marque specialist J.D. Classics in November 2009. Treated to a recent overhaul of its front brakes and suspension, the S-type has also benefited of late from a new clutch, stainless steel exhaust and fresh set of tyres. Finished in Green with original Green leather upholstery, the sports saloon is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission, bodywork and interior trim. Worthy of close inspection, 'EPY 400C' is taxed and MOT'd into February next year.
