The Ford Thames 400E was produced in the Ford factory at Dagenham in Essex between 1957 and 1965. The chassis was available as a 10/12/15 cwt carrying capacity fitted with various body derivatives such as the van, flatbed and drop side pickup truck, 8/10 seat estate car, 12 seater minibus. In addition to these using the chassis/cab a wide variety of special bodies were built along with camper conversions. The 400E was fitted with a 1703cc petrol engine or a 1600cc diesel engine both with a column change three speed gearbox. From January 1963, an improved version of the 1703 cc engine was introduced for the range being uprated to 55 bhp in low compression form, while for premium petrol users a high compression head was offered giving an output of 58 bhp. A four speed all synchromesh gearbox was also available from this time, and if fitted a heavy duty back axle with a four pinion differential was specified.
Looking back, the Ford Thames is considered a very important part of Ford’s history, with the vehicle being very much unchanged for the duration of its manufacture and then superseded by the Ford transit in 1965.
Manufactured in the final model year the Thames was offered, BJS 775C was subject to recent restoration believed to be between 2015 and 2020 with some photographic evidence to document this. This particular vehicle was featured in the 2010 film NEDS, and is offered with a small collection of documents including some previous MOT certificates and an MOT valid until 28 April 2022. Please note that the vehicle remains green on the V5 document.
