Lot details
Registration No: RRY179M
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

The RS3100 was a limited-production variant of the famous `Big Capri', devised by Advanced Vehicle Operations and built at Halewood to homologate wings and spoilers for FIA International Group 2 racing. This meant the Cologne Capris could have a crack at the Batmobile BMWs in the European Touring Car Championship - and that led to some legendary battles between the bewinged coupes. But, though the rules decreed that 1000 identical cars had to be made, the real figure produced was only 250 (50 went to Australia), making the RS3100 the rarest, most collectible roadgoing Capri, with fewer built than the closely related German-produced RS2600. The RS was based on the Mk1 3000GT and, as well as the chin and ducktail spoilers, the RS used the Mk1 3000GT's 60-degree Essex V6 overbored from 2993 to 3091cc to give 148bhp, 10 more than standard, plus subtly different flares to the front wheelarches clearing unique-to model 6x13 RS alloys, plus Granada callipers, RS2600 ventilated discs and RS2600-type suspension with Bilstein dampers and subtly modified geometry. It did incorporate September 1972 upgrades such as quad headlights and the later, Granada-style dashboard.

Finished in Olympic Blue with black upholstery, this particular example has formed part of a large private collection since 1990. Extensively restored in the past, `RRY 179M' has graced the pages of Ford's own Heritage Magazine (February / March 1996 issue) and remains highly presentable. Riding on correct type alloy wheels but little used over recent years, the Capri would now benefit from some recommissioning work. A true 1970s icon, this appealing RS3100 is offered for sale with numerous bills, invoices and old MOT certificates.
