Introduced in 1984 and based on the luxurious Mulsanne, the Bentley Eight was aimed at a younger more entrepreneurial buyer. The sporting pretensions inspired by its Le Mans-esque mesh grille were supported by stiffer front suspension and sharper steering, endowing the model with tauter handling. Bosch Fuel injection and ABS brakes became standard in 1986, while power memory seats and leather upholstery were added the following year. Power came from Bentley's ubiquitous 6750 cc OHV V8 unit that combined with a three-speed (four-speed on the later models) automatic gearbox to give the newcomer a top speed of 130 mph. Suspension was independent by coil springs front and rear, coupled with hydraulic self-levelling height control at the back. Braking was by ventilated discs at the front and solid units at the rear. The idea of trading maple eye walnut for grained wood veneers and a substantial price cut clearly worked, with the originally UK-only Eight eventually being sold in mainland Europe and the USA as well. The model was superseded by the Bentley Brooklands in 1992 after a total of 1,736 had been sold worldwide.
The right-hand drive Eight being offered is a familiar sight to H&H, having been purchased by the previous owner at our November 2005 sale and by the vendor at our April 2010 auction. A 1987 example, it is finished in Windsor Blue Metallic teamed with a Light Blue interior. It has had four keepers all told and is understood to have recently benefited from £3,000 worth of bodywork and wheelarch refurbishment by Bauer Millett of Manchester. The vendor now regards the luxury saloon's bodywork, paintwork, engine, automatic transmission and interior trim as all "excellent". This comparatively low mileage Bentley comes with extensive service history (14 stamps), handbooks, old MOTs, toolkit etc and is taxed until the end of September and MOT'd in February 2012.
PLEASE NOTE: The Bentley tool kit is not included with this sale.
