The Honda Motor Company was founded by Soichiro Honda in 1937, initially producing piston rings for Toyota. They made their first motorcycle in 1949 and within 10 years had become the biggest producer in the world. It could be said that the CB72 was one of the machines that changed the face of British motorcycling, easily outperforming contemporary British motorcycles of double its engine capacity. As a result, the British motorcycle industry suffered a catastrophic decline and had all but disappeared a few later. Probably one of the defining motorcycles for many Honda enthusiasts the beautifully engineered machine is the epitome of a classic Honda featuring an inclined twin-cylinder 247cc overhead camshaft wet-sump engine in a race-style spine frame developing 25 bhp, enough for a 90mph top speed. This sort of performance requires good stopping power, so it is fitted with 200mm twin leading-shoe brakes at both front and rear.
This CB72 was first registered in August 1967 and was acquired by the present, and only its fourth owner in March 2005 when it was completely dismantled for a restoration that took 4 years to complete. All the cycle parts have been professionally re-plated or repainted keeping the bike as original as possible. New Hagon rear shock absorbers were fitted and the engine and transmission bearings checked with all oil seals being renewed with all other engine and transmission components such as camshafts, camshaft chain, gearbox selector forks, clutch plates inspected and replaced as necessary, including new chain and sprockets. The crank has been overhauled by SEP who also relined the cylinders to suit new pistons supplied by Dave Silver. During the restoration, this machine was upgraded to electronic ignition with a new wiring loom and a solid-state rectifier fitted. It is presently fitted with a pair of Dunstall replica exhaust silencers, which were very popular in the 1960s, but a pair of conventional pattern silencers will be included in the sale along with the original owners manual, an official Honda workshop manual and a www.honda305.com restoration guide. Everything else is standard except for the indicators, an essential addition for safety on busy roads that could easily be removed for that authentic 1967 look. ‘LCR 40F’ has won an award every time it has been exhibited including in 2010 at the Scottish Motorcycle Show - Highly Commended, 2011 at the Scottish Borders Historic Motoring Extravaganza – 2nd prize and 2019 at the Arran Classic Bike Show – 1st prize. Run recently, the bike comes supplied with a copious restoration file with numerous receipts from the likes of SEP, Dave Silver and CSML, a few MOTs and a current V5C.
