Lot details Registration No: 500 APX Chassis No: BEF2525 Mot Expiry: March 2015
Introduced in 1959, the AC Greyhound was only in production for four years during which time just 83 are thought to have left the Thames Ditton factory. According to its accompanying continuation buff logbook, chassis BEF2525 underwent an engine transplant (from Bristol 110-series to Bristol 100-series power) in circa 1973. Entering the current ownership some twenty-nine years later, the AC performed well on a tour of Southern France the following summer aside from a drop-off in oil pressure when hot. Subsequently removed and dispatched to Belcher Engineering of Diss, the 2-litre straight-six was found to have minimal bore wear (-0.10thou). Treated to new main/big-end/camshaft bearings, fresh pistons (8.5:1 CR) and a full-flow oil filter conversion, its overhaul prompted a raft of further restoration work that saw Bob Ransley refurbish the bodywork/paintwork and Gary Stone rejuvenate the headlining, Webasto roof and carpets. A retired garagiste, the vendor reinforced the front suspension spring mounts, chassis extension tubes and jacking points. He also created an access panel beneath the rear seat to provide provision for oiling (and perhaps replacing) the handbrake cable and fitted inertia reel seatbelts up front. The brakes were fettled with new master cylinders/linings/disc pads and a replacement windscreen sourced from Pilkington to complement the restored steering wheel. Rating the Greyhound as follows: Bodywork/Paintwork: `excellent', Engine: `reconditioned, requires running-in', Electrical Equipment: `good, new battery etc' and Four-Speed Manual plus Overdrive Transmission: `works OK, weak synchro on third gear', the seller summarises `500 APX' thus: `The car is not concours as it retains its original leather seats which show signs of wear but it is a very good example of the model and an excellent sports tourer with generous seating and a large boot. Ideal for touring the continent'. This handsome AC is offered for sale with sundry paperwork, oil cooler kit and MOT valid until March 20th 2015'.
