"Of all the cars we have occasion to drive, there is one above all others which, by its every characteristic, clearly defines the term sportscar" (Road & Track magazine on the MG TF, 1954)
Last of the MG T-series line, the TF was introduced in October 1953. Although, mechanically very similar to its TD predecessor, the provision of a shorter radiator, revised wing line and faired-in headlamps lent it an altogether sportier air. Equipped with rack-and-pinion-steering, independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, the new model helped maintain the marque's 'Safety Fast' reputation. Initially powered by a twin-carburettor fed 1250cc XPAG four-cylinder engine, the TF could be had with the more muscular but optional 1466cc XPEG unit from November 1954 onwards. Faster and more accelerative than its smaller capacity sibling, the resultant TF 1500 accounted for approximately 3,200 sales (mostly overseas) before being superseded by the MGA in September 1955.
Finished in green metallic with beige leather upholstery, this particular right-hand drive 'home-market' example is described by the vendor as being in good condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. In the current ownership since 1983, it was reportedly treated to an extensive body-off restoration some five years ago. Once powder-coated, its chassis was fitted with a replacement ash frame and clad in new body panels. Employing the car's heritage certificate as a guide, it was then "returned to its original colour and trim combination" (the particular shade of almond green used being specific to TF 1500s). Said to have done less than 1,000 mile since work was completed, this well-stocked MG also benefits from a period heater, chrome wire wheels and renewed weather equipment. Part of a small but select private collection, this rare UK-supplied TF 1500 is offered for sale with a "comprehensive folder" (including "over sixty photographs taken during restoration"), Heritage Trust Certificate and MOT certificate valid until January 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
