The Firebird was produced as the successor to the Firefly and incorporated changes to keep abreast of developments. Built to the same high standards as its more expensive brethren, it was only current from August 1934 to December 1936 by which time some 450 had been made. A chassis modification allowed the installation of the then-new and now-legendary all-synchromesh gearbox, with power from a 1842cc OHV four-cylinder engine, propelling the model to a reputed capable top speed of 75mph.
Manufactured new in 1935 and originally finished in Holbrook Saloon coachwork, the Alvis is reputed to have been re-bodied into the Tourer coachwork (as presented now) in the 1970s/1980s. Finished in Green paintwork with bare metal wings and Red wheels, the interior upholstery is trimmed in Black leather. In current (late) ownership since 1994, the Firebird has been extensively used in competition in VSCC events, competing in speed trials and hillclimbs. Offered with several trophies for podiums in such events, the Alvis has had successes at the Curborough Speed Trials, Pembury Sprint, and Prescott Hillclimb, and has numerous scrutineering stickers on the dashboard.
Benefitting from an overhauled engine and new clutch assembly in c.2017 by marque specialists M.C.I Ltd., the Alvis also received balancing to the carburettors and other mechanical fettling in 2019 to the cost of some £1,400. Treated to a pre-season service in January/February this year, sadly the vendor passed away in February this year and thus, chassis ‘12357’ has not seen use since. Therefore offered requiring a degree of recommissioning, the Firebird is accompanied by a history file with images of ‘BNA 742’ at events, previous invoices and MOTs, and a current V5C document. Previously supercharged, the supercharger is accompanying the car. Supplied with a spare set of wheels as well as the hood and frame, the Alvis, once recommissioned, would be great to see at competition events again soon!
